To access the menu just hit the A key... you can save the game by the menu.

How do you get leveled up enough to even kill the first main villian??

I think you mean the Vampire master, right? The one that appeared when you first took control of Poland and had to confront Viper when talking to Poland's friend (I dont remember Poland's friend's name). If you are talking about that, it's a bug that's been fixed, you can download the newest version of Last Heroes on this site to overcome that.

And if you mention some other enemies, just kill all of the monsters on your way then you will level enough to kick their asses.
